In Alabama's northwestern corner, Florence is situated along the Tennessee River. It is the largest and main city of the Quad Cities commonly known as "The Shoals" which also includes the cities of Muscle Shoals, Sheffield and Tuscumbia, all located in Colbert County.
Florence is known for its annual tourism events that include the W.C. Handy Music Festival and Renaissance Faire. Landmarks include the 20th Century Rosenbaum House, the only Frank Lloyd Wright designed home located in Alabama, as well as the Florence Indian Mound, constructed by indigenous people between 100 BCE and 400 BCE. It is the largest surviving earthen mound in the state and is 43 feet high. Another draw to the Florence area is the University of North Alabama, UNA, founded in 1830 as LaGrange College.
